Routines of the Masters: Check out this 10 step plan

Ten lessons from Richard Branson

As you spend time thinking about your goals and your dreams, these ten lessons from Richard Branson will really help you dial in on that precision. The lessons stem from how Richard sets goals, and they form the core of my own beliefs and what I teach my children.

Let’s get right into Richard’s ten-step plan:

1. Politeness matters. Richard is extremely polite. When he was a kid, if he criticized someone, his mother would make him stand in front of the mirror at home and say, “What you are seeing in others is really what you’re seeing in yourself, so look in the mirror.” This educated him on the key leadership habit of looking for and then encouraging the gifts and talents in other people.

2. Be massively independent. Growing up, Richard did not have a mother who did things for him. In fact, Robin Sharma relayed the following story to me: When Richard was twelve, his mother told him to cycle one hundred miles alone to visit a relative. Those childhood experiences were his mother’s way of growing his self-reliance and building that invincible inner core that has served him so well as an entrepreneur. Now, this is a lesson I often see an opportunity for parents to teach in the community. For example, at the grocery store, I see a mom or dad unloading groceries from the cart, bagging them up, pushing the cart out to the car, and loading the groceries up themselves, and what are their kids doing? Not helping. Maybe they’re focused on their devices instead. This is something my kids never do. My kids unload, pack, and load up the truck, then take the cart back. My son’s autism consultant also shared more on this, saying that most kids, when they get into college or university, haven’t learned the skills to stand on their own two feet and be independent (so much so that they have to ask the professor if they’re meant to use a pen or pencil) because their parents always made decisions for them. True story.

3. Screw it—just do it. Yes, another of my favorites. What makes a great company and a great life isn’t so much an inspiring idea as it is flawless execution around that idea. Anyone remember what Edison said? “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” You’ve got to do the work. Richard shared with Robin Sharma that much of his success has come from his philosophy of disregarding the naysayers and remembering that the impossible is generally the untried. This is a man with a huge bias toward action.

4. Lavish praise on people! So important for everyone, and it doesn’t matter what you’re doing. The bigger the dream you have, the more important the team. Should I say it again? Every successful entrepreneur out there will tell you that you can’t do it alone. You’ve written out your goals and know your dream, but the real key is finding that genius-level talent to get your vision delivered into reality. If you know only how to surround yourself with mediocre people, what do you think your results will be? You’ll continue to experience mediocre results. Richard Branson is brilliant at finding the right people to bring his targets of opportunity to life, and one of the things he does is lavish his team with praise. Be relentless, and celebrate and develop and inspire your people. You’re the leader. This falls to you. Don’t fall into the trap of criticizing and focusing on the negative.

5. Be a radical innovator. Another one I love. When Richard Branson was a young entrepreneur with nothing more than a little college newspaper, he still showed a lust for disregarding the rules. He challenged the status quo and disrupted what was considered normal. You look at his life, and you see what he’s accomplished, the untried things he’s done, his out-of-the-box thinking and creativity.

6. Build your brand. This is one of the most challenging tasks for most authors—and for most people. Richard Branson gets branding, and he knows what he and the Virgin name stand for: fun, good value, and strong customer service. Figure out your brand, and remember that like Richard, you must master the art of getting attention.

7. Find your Necker Island. Did you know that Richard paid roughly $300,000 for his beloved Necker Island? He and his then girlfriend were visiting the Caribbean on a getaway, and they fell in love with Necker, but it was about $4,000,000. However, Richard wouldn’t give up. Don’t discount the power of a ridiculous amount of persistence around your most closely loved goals, because what happened was that a few months later, the owner needed cash, and Richard made his deeply discounted offer. Now, not everyone has that kind of cash or can buy a private island, but your Necker Island could be a spot in the park, a cabin in the woods… You get the idea. We all need a retreat, a place to go to recharge and get away so we can come back at the top of our game. What I’m saying is that we live in a world with so much noise and complexity, so you need to find your personal retreat, even if it is a rotted bench in a park where you can withdraw, think, create, renew, and rest.

8. Luck wins. We make luck! Do I need to say any more on this?

9. Don’t do it if it’s not fun. Richard wears a smile pretty much all the time. He laughs naturally, and he radiates happiness. No doubt, he loves his life and all that’s in it. Love your life, laugh, be happy, and do what you do only if it’s fun. Otherwise, why are you doing it? I remember just last year, my kids came home from school telling me what one of the teachers was telling the kids on career day: “A job is not supposed to be fun.” Yes, he really did say that, and that was the kind of influence the school was providing. That is so wrong! A career is supposed to be fun, or why are you doing it? My kids will never have him for a teacher again. As parents, we need to be mindful of the negative influences around us and our children. The lesson for us is that life’s too short to be doing work that destroys your soul. Right now is the best time in the history of the world for everyone to become an entrepreneur. So find the work you adore, that you love, that has you leaping from bed every morning as excited as a child on Christmas, and get busy changing the world with it.

10. With gifts come responsibilities. Richard is one of the wealthiest people in the world, and he gets that being a good person outdoes all those shiny toys. With great wealth comes great responsibility, so he spends a lot of his days with his foundation to help kids in need. This reminds me of something going on in my own community and across BC: Homelessness and a serious lack of affordable housing has hit epidemic proportions and has forced many, including many with children in school, to spend nearly all their income on inflated rents. Some are even living in tents. This issue is dividing communities across BC. Some are of the mindset that they’ve earned the right to live here, that they can afford to buy a second or third home, and that those less fortunate need to move on. Then there are those in the community who are stepping forward and doing their part, donating land and using their wealth and positions to advocate and fight the endless red tape for those without a voice so that none will be forced to leave and start over because of a lack of affordable housing. Just remember that every one of us has it in us to make a difference. Stay great! Be awesome!

How to stay ultra-inspired

How to stay ultra-inspired

I’m going to stray a bit from my regular posts to talk about something at the foundation of every change you make to your life or your career: how to stay ultra-inspired while you achieve that goal you’ve set your heart on and want so badly. Staying inspired is what will get you through the obstacles that come at you, what will keep you going, and what will get you out of bed at five a.m. so you can implement the five a.m. club routines and keep yourself focused on achieving your goals and having your amazing life. It’s easy in a world filled with so much criticism and negativity to just give up and go back to your ordinary life or to mediocrity, settling for second or third or fourth best, doing what’s easy, or just making excuses for why you can’t have it all instead of stepping out of your comfort zone and getting that dream career, that dream home, that loving relationship.

If you’re trying to make change but are going through a time where you feel tired, irritated, and ready to throw in the towel because change is messy, or you’re feeling confused, or you have so much coming at you that you’re feeling overwhelmed, or you feel as if your life is disrupted, let me remind you to keep going, because that change will be beautiful in the end. Don’t take your eye off that goal. I didn’t, and if you ask anyone who knows me, when I first started out as an author, everyone laughed in my face, saying that I wasn’t being realistic and that I was in the wrong league and could never amount to anything. But I didn’t listen. In fact, I didn’t share what I was doing until I received my first publishing contract and published my first book. Even through all the struggles, the closed doors, and having to pivot and come at things in another direction, I kept my eye on my goal and didn’t let anything get in my way. I didn’t let naysayers have a voice in my head.

I really believe that everyone deserves a beautiful life, and it’s really important to protect your inspiration. There’s a lot of news of conflict and negativity in the world, and yes, even those in your circle of friends or family could be energy vampires. We all have good days and hard seasons, and I still do, but the key is learning and setting your tight bubble of focus where you protect your inspiration and protect your energy, your mindset, your heartset. That’s how you go through the world and stay on your game and use what you’ve learned to pivot from a hard day or a hard season or a hard period in your life to rise to your best.

This is how you stay ultra-inspired to rise to your legendary:

1.  Feel the power of circulation. You can’t be legendary if you have no energy, period! You look at any iconic masters, any A players, they have tons of energy. Staying inspired, being a leader in your field, and producing an exceptional amount of work isn’t about hard tactics and strategy and execution or about ignoring inspiration. In fact, game changers do what they do because of inspiration.

You know that fire in your belly that fills you with so much joy and excitement? Well, that fire of inspiration begins with the power of circulation, which means getting out there, managing by leaving your office and walking around. Circulate around the world, circulate around your community, and meet new people. By meeting new people, I get inspired by new insights. By hearing new conversations, I get new levels of energy. There is great power in circulation. If you want to be inspired, get out there. Conversations are very educational, and I’m not talking about listening to someone whine and complain, because I think everyone is tired of being around the kind of person who will sap your energy and your inspiration. So be sure to surround yourself with people who are likeminded.

2.  Get out in nature. The second insight to being more inspired is nature. Get out daily in the woods, a park, as close to nature as you can get, depending on where you live. You can listen to an audiobook while you walk in the woods or look at the scenery, but really connect with nature and the natural beauty by getting out in it. A lot of really good research now tells us that if you want to increase your happiness, boost your immune system, release that fear hormone that holds you back, and boost your serotonin, you need to walk in nature, connect to nature.

3.  Adopt a nightly sunset ritual. It may sound ridiculous, but seriously, sit outside and watch the sun set. I don’t always get to do this, but I do try. Think about this: If the sun set only once every hundred years, you and the rest of the world would be sitting outside, watching it. But unfortunately, we get too busy with everything and don’t take the time. Because it happens every night, we take it for granted. This is called hedonic adaptation, where something we were once thankful for and excited about suddenly becomes our new normal, and our brains get used to it. Our brains are hardwired for ingratitude. Now, this served us well hundreds of years ago when we needed to look at our environment to see what was wrong, because if we didn’t, we’d be killed and eaten by a wild animal, some warring tribe, or some other danger. The problem is that now we’re living in the modern age, but our brains are still hardwired for negativity even though it doesn’t serve us anymore. So watch the sun set. If you don’t, you will miss it.

4.  Connect with your loved ones. Have a conversation with your children, your family, over a three-hour meal instead of turning on the TV and sitting in front of it for the night. What inspires me are the simple pleasures. If you want to stay inspired, connect with your loved ones and become a perfect moment creator. What’s most important to our families are experiences, not more things. Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s nothing wrong with things, that PS4, that flashy car, that nice home, that dressy watch, but those are not what’s important. Be a perfect moment creator with your family.

5.  Do the “I am” 25 practice. Here’s the last one, the “I am” 25 practice. This involves a journal, and what you do is finish the sentence “I am…” twenty-five times. This is how it could look, but adapt it for yourself:

I am more confident.
I am more brave.
I am more innovative.
I am more energetic.
I am more happy.

What it does is create a blueprint in your mind of the elite performer, and as you keep doing it, that thinking will then become your way of being.

What’s coming next is how to set goals!

So let’s get into the nitty gritty of the five a.m. club

So let’s get into the nitty gritty of the five a.m. club. What makes up this routine is the 20/20/20 Formula, which focuses on four principles with strategic precision:

            1. Enriching your mind

            2.  Feeding your physical life

            3.  Nurturing your emotional life

            4.  Tending to your soul

What this means is not reaching for your cell phone to check whether anyone liked your Facebook post, checking your texts because you need to see what fires or emergencies you need to deal with, or firing up your computer to check the emails that have flooded your inbox and begin your day by answering every one of them. As soon as you do any of these things, you’re setting up your day to be reactive instead of strategic. This really is a huge concept and is so important. When you first wake, you’re looking after you and only you. This is what it means to be in the five a.m. club.

This routine is really about dialing in on your precision. You’re all asking, what am I supposed to be doing at five a.m. when I would rather be sleeping? From 5:00 to 5:20 a.m., the only thing you’re meant to be doing is moving! Get some water and drink it in that first pocket of time, those first twenty minutes. You want to move, so do jumping jacks, aerobics, get on that exercise bike or treadmill, or grab a skipping rope—any workout where you’re sweating. When you sweat first thing in the morning, you release BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which helps repair brain cells damaged by stress. You know that mindset that has driven us all from birth and created all the havoc and emotional and physical health problems we all now struggle with? Yeah, that one. What that morning workout from 5:00 to 5:20 does is repair brain cells, increase your metabolic rate so your fat-burning engine gets electrified, and increase your energy.

When you work out first thing in the morning, you also release serotonin, which makes you happy. Even if you’re cranky and feeling miserable because you’re up at five a.m. to work out, that workout is releasing serotonin and dopamine, another inspirational neurotransmitter. Dopamine is so important because it’s the chemical that allows you to feel that fire in your belly that will help you build your career, your business, your relationship, your family, and do epic things with your life. Pretty cool, huh? Just remember, not anywhere in these twenty minutes is there time for you to reach for your cell phone. No, turn it off and keep it off. When you start this routine, you’ll start to notice how you feel when you first drag your butt out of bed, but after that first twenty minutes of working out, you’ll feel so different.

The second twenty-minute pocket, from 5:20 to 5:40 a.m., is really all about thinking. This is where I make my coffee and grab my pen and journal. Let’s get into this one: We live in a world where we’re all so fricking busy being busy, but if you really sit down and think about it, do you really know exactly what you’re doing that you’re busy being busy with? That second twenty minutes is about writing in a journal. Yup, I really said that. Use a pen and paper, not a computer or your cell phone, where you can jot some notes down. Get an actual journal, and take the time in your chicken scratch to be introspective. Write what you want your day to look like. If you’re going through a really painful or challenging time in your life where something isn’t working or you’re having problems and are frustrated and angry with someone or something or even yourself, because nothing seems to be working, write it out.

These twenty minutes are about reflection, thinking, and introspection in a world where we don’t do that anymore because we’re all addicted to our devices. Get deliberate and think about who you want to become, what you want to do, what you want your day to look like, what you want to accomplish, and write it down in your journal. This was how Robin Sharma shared this concept with me to really make it sink in: Imagine you spend your life climbing this one mountain only to get to the top and realize you climbed the wrong one. If you get your days right, your days are your life in miniature, and a great life is nothing more than a series of great days strung together.

The final pocket of the 20/20/20 is learning, so from 5:40 to 6:00, you need to adopt something called the 2× 3× Mindset. If you want to double your income and your impact, triple your investment in two key areas, your personal mastery and your professional education. Success in business and life comes down to being curious and learning. It’s not the smartest who wins; it’s the most curious. It’s the one who’s always learning and learns the most. This could mean listening to a podcast, getting into that course you’re taking, or reviewing your study notes from a conference. Consider rereading something you’ve learned to really dial it in so it becomes part of your routine.

It’s so important to be an eternal learner. It takes learning just one idea today to change your life. I’ve been to a lot of conferences and learned a lot of things, like many of you, but just going to conferences isn’t enough. You have to apply what you learn, review the notes over and over, and study them fifty times so you can deconstruct them and understand how to apply what you’ve learned and make it work in your life. Learning an idea without execution is delusion. Just remember that learning an idea and then executing it can be the difference between living an ordinary life and living something rare and exceptional. If you’re anything like me, you might need a reminder that all change is hard in the beginning, messy in the middle, and beautiful in the end. It takes 66 days for change to become an automatic part of your routine.

NOW IN PAPERBACK

The latest installment in The Friessens family saga is now available in paperback!

She never realized until she lost him that he was the only man she’d ever love.

Katy and Steven were the loves of each other’s lives until a tragedy and the fallout of Steven’s injuries drove the couple apart.

They share a son, but Katy and Steven have moved on with their lives, dating other people, and neither has seen the other in five long years. But when Steven comes knocking on Katy’s parents’ door after learning she’s back in town, Katy is forced to face her estranged husband and the love that broke her heart, and his intentions regarding their all-but-over marriage are soon made very clear.

The only problem is that as simple as it would be for them to walk away, seeing just what it means to move on and start a new life may not be as easy as they once thought.

"Lorhainne Eckhart brings us another real family story with so much love and emotion that you won't want it to end!"

Learn the routines of the masters

Okay, welcome back to my Monday blog. One thing I want to share with you is a series of five routines A players adopt, which I call the routines of the masters. The first in this series, the one I’ll talk about today, is the five a.m. club.

What makes someone world class is less about genetics and more about his or her habits. That’s why you really want to lock yours in. If you look at any of the A players, you’ll see that they haven’t necessarily been lucky or born into the right family or had the right opportunities, even though these may be qualities society tells us are necessary, and many have believed this to be true—but it’s completely false. All those A players are no different from you and me. Everyone has what it takes to become one, and how to get there is about installing the right routines, the right daily rituals. Once you get those routines to where they’re automatic, and remember that doing so takes 66 days, according to research, you’ll be able to run the right plays and get the right results.

Remember, no idea ever works unless you do the work! Visualization alone is a great habit, allowing you to develop a vision of whatever you want to accomplish, but now you have to actually do the work. All change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous in the end. After you install one routine or habit and master it, move on to the next. Never stop learning. Over time, these routines become a way of being. All change is meant to be hard at first, or it wouldn’t be valuable.

When I bring up the five a.m. club, you all might roll your eyes and be ready to stop reading, because you’re like, “I’m not getting up at five a.m.,” or “I need my sleep,” or “I’m not made that way,” or “My parents couldn’t even get up at five,” or… Do you see yourself in all those excuses? Although I’ve always been an early riser, the routine of the five a.m. club was one I implemented only back in April. Please remember this: Winning the battle of the bed, putting your mind over the mattress, and getting your two feet up and out is a true victory. I’m telling you that it’s hard at first but truly worth it as we dive deep into the routines.

Robin Sharma told me about the idea of a distraction nation. If you live in the city and are driving and stop at a red light, how many people do you see reaching down and picking up their cell phones to check their texts? In a coffeeshop or walking downtown, how many people do you see walking around while checking their notifications? These people are addicted to distraction, and an addiction to distraction is the death of your creativity.

If you win the battle of the bed and get up at five a.m., you’re giving yourself three pristine hours while the rest of the world is sleeping or distracted to dial in your mindset, your heartset, your physical life. Because how you begin your day is how you live your day. If you can start your day well, forget about the year, the month, the week: Just focus on living the best day you can. Why do you want to get up at five a.m. and not six or seven? Because it’s the pristine part of the day, when you can give yourself that first hour to replenish your mind, your body, your self. Call it your holy time or whatever you want.

As I get into the rest of the routines of the five a.m. club over the next few weeks, just remember that most people live their lives reactively, as though they’re in a five-alarm fire. They reach for their phones as soon as they wake to check messages and emails instead of what they’re supposed to be doing, which is looking after themselves. You know when you’re on a plane and the flight attendant runs through the safety protocol at takeoff, saying, “In the event of cabin depressurization, the oxygen masks fall. Put your mask on first, then your child’s”? Same thing applies in life and with the five a.m. club. How you begin your day is how you live your day.

Next in the routines of the masters is what you’re meant to be doing in the five a.m. club, and this one was a game changer for me.

Returning to the Southern Gulf Islands and my home on Salt Spring Island this evening after a quick trip to visit family in Alberta, Canada this week.  It's always wonderful to spend time with those we don't get to see very often, and we had a terrific time (even after driving through storms, braving the holiday traffic and missing last night's ferry, LOL!)  Still, it's nice to be back home again--rested, relaxed and ready to get back to my writing.  Happy weekend to all!

COMING SOON

THE FIRST TIME I SAW YOU will be released next week, but you can preorder your copy today at select eRetailers!

Like his parents, Andy and Laura Friessen, Gabriel knows what it means to face an impossible situation. When he puts up an ad looking for a roommate, he never expects to meet a down-on-her-luck gorgeous single mom with a meddling family, a crazy ex-boyfriend, and enough chemistry between them to heat the county. The only problem is that she doesn’t believe in happily ever after and sees falling in love as a mistake only fools make. But Gabriel can’t stop thinking about her, wanting her, and is determined to show her that the road to love isn’t as dangerous as she believes.

Gabriel's story is now available for presale at Nook, iBooks, Kobo, GooglePlay and Smashwords.  Read the first five chapters here!
