Close Your Eyes… This Is How the Scam Begins

Lorhainne’s Monday Blog returns with a chilling look at online romance scams—and the new release Lured by Lies is available

Dear Readers,

I’m bringing back my Monday Blog, and I wanted to begin with something close to the heart of my newest release, Lured by Lies, the first book in The Dating Deception Series.

This story began with one disturbing question:

What if the person who made you feel most seen was the one studying you the closest?

I Want to Tell You a Story

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a woman sitting alone at her kitchen table.

The house is quiet. Too quiet. The kind of quiet that comes after loss, after the funeral flowers are gone, after everyone else goes back to their lives and expects you to somehow do the same.

Her children are grown. They call. They care. But they are not there when the evenings stretch too long. They are not there when she reaches across the bed and remembers no one is sleeping beside her. They are not there when she makes coffee for one and hears the old floorboards settle in a house that once held laughter, arguments, holidays, sickness, and love.

Then one night, a message arrives.

Not crude. Not obvious. Not desperate.

Kind.

Thoughtful.

He noticed her photo. He read her profile. He understands grief. He lost someone too. He doesn’t push. He listens. He asks questions no one else has dared to ask because everyone else is afraid of touching the bruise.

He tells her she is still a woman.

Not just a widow.

Not just someone’s mother.

Not just the keeper of an old life.

For the first time in years, she smiles at her phone.

Now imagine the man isn’t a man.

Imagine he is a script.

When Love Becomes the Trap

Romance scammers don’t always begin with money.

The dangerous ones begin with attention.

They study the ache before they ever ask for a dollar. They learn your habits, your grief, your family situation, your fears, your pride. They find the part of you that wants to be seen again and then step into that space wearing the face of everything you thought you had lost.

A widower.

A successful businessman.

A man who understands grief.

A man who doesn’t rush.

A man who says exactly the right thing at exactly the right time.

But behind that perfect message may not be one man at all.

That is the darkest part.

Many romance scams today are run by organized groups with scripts, fake identities, stolen photos, routed phone numbers, fake investment platforms, and teams of people trained to build emotional dependence. Some know how to sound educated. Some know how to sound wounded. Some know how to sound noble.

And some know how to make suspicion feel like betrayal.

Who Gave the Predator the Map?

We like to believe our private information is private because that helps us sleep at night.

We trust banks, corporations, government agencies, medical offices, apps, phone companies, and institutions that ask for everything but too often fail to guard it as if our lives depend on it.

But pieces of us are everywhere.

Our age.

Our address.

Our spouse’s death.

Our children’s names.

Our house.

Our habits.

Our grief.

To a predator, those are not details.

They are a map.

A widow’s obituary becomes an opening line.

A paid-off home becomes a target.

A lonely profile becomes an invitation.

A family photograph becomes leverage.

A woman’s grief becomes the door.

That is the world behind Lured by Lies.

The Question Isn’t “How Could She?”

People love to ask, “How could someone fall for that?”

But that is the wrong question.

The real question is:

How close have I come?

What if it wasn’t some foolish stranger?

What if it was your mother?

Your sister.

Your best friend.

Your widowed father.

Your daughter after a divorce.

You, on the loneliest night of your life, answering the one message that sounded like hope.

That is the turn.

Not “How could she?”

But “How close have I come?”

Because shame protects the predator.

Silence protects the network.

Judgment protects the machine.

About Lured by Lies

She thought he was love.
He was the nightmare.

At fifty, widow Isabelle Parker is lonely, grieving, and quietly disappearing inside the empty rooms of her Silver Ridge home. Her grown children have moved on with lives of their own, and her best friend, Julie, is determined Isabelle shouldn’t spend the rest of hers alone.

Then Isabelle steps into the world of online dating.

James is local, kind, and safe. But David Lawson is something else entirely—charming, attentive, worldly, and able to say exactly what Isabelle needs to hear. He sees her grief. He praises her photography. He makes her feel desired, alive, and chosen in a way she hasn’t felt in years.

But some men don’t love.

They study.

As David pulls Isabelle into a private world of messages, secrets, promises, and dreams of a future, the romance she believes is saving her begins to tighten into something far more dangerous.

By the time Isabelle realizes she trusted the wrong man, the danger is no longer only online.

It has found her home.

One Final Thought

Lured by Lies is a romantic suspense thriller, but beneath the danger, betrayal, and chilling mystery is a truth I couldn’t look away from:

Vulnerability is not a crime.

Loneliness is not a crime.

Wanting to be loved is not a crime.

What predators do with that longing is.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for welcoming back my Monday Blog.
