1 in 68. You’ve seen the latest stats and you have to be asking yourself why? Just a few years ago, we were hearing about the skyrocketing Autism stats when it was 1 in 150. With still more boys affected than girls at a ratio of 5 to 1. And the reality of the situation, is there isn’t a person out there that isn’t touched in some way with Autism. Whether it’s your child, a relative or a friend. Everyone knows someone. I was asked a question many years ago by a teacher at a public school. How do you tell a parent their child has autism? And my reply, "Carefully". What most people don’t realize is how difficult it is for a parent to hear that word, Autism, even the suggestion they display all the symptoms. A parent doesn’t want it to be that. What a parent wants to hear is it's just “this” and all you need to do is a simple change of diet or even a pill and all will be well. But it’s not that simple. Quite often I think it’s because many people are aware of all the obstacles placed in front of parents and children with autism. It isn’t the fact that autism is challenging, which don’t get me wrong, Autism brings an entire set of challenges that is unique and different for every parent. It is the long road of getting diagnosed, finding credible therapy, where do get funding, and the hoops you have to jump through to get your child the help they need. It can make a sane person crazy. But Autism isn’t the end of the world even though many may believe they are at the end of their rope. There are so many children who after receiving early intervention are living their own independent lives, and are becoming contributing members of society. And one of the most important things for everyone to remember, is when you meet a child with Autism. You have met one child. As no two diagnosed are the same.
