How many times have you been told you just need to think positively about a bad situation and then everything will be okay?
Positive thinking isn’t wrong, it’s just not really effective. Positive thinking is basically saying that there is something negative and you are overcoming it--the problem is it doesn’t work very well because there is something better, and it really comes down to a strategy of getting on with it instead of focusing all your energy on thinking positive in a negative situation to try and get yourself feeling better about the bad thing you’ve automatically labelled.
Remember good thing/bad thing and why you shouldn't label a situation that suddenly is in your mind a bad awful thing that is so horrible that you don’t know how you're going to dig your way out of it, as it leaves you in tears, stressed, anxious and maybe with sleepless nights filled with dread and worry over that something that has just happened--you know, losing your job or having your salary suddenly cut in half, not able to afford your house payments or your health takes a turn for the worse.
Think of it this way: if you haven’t put a label on it and called it a bad thing, then you're not having to use positive thinking to overcome it. Try not labeling a situation going on in your life as good or bad. And when something happens, as soon as you find your mind going to that spot of wanting to label this a bad thing and you feel the edges of anxiety, stress, worry and sleepless nights biting at you, stop before you downward spiral anymore. Don’t label it anything--instead just say this is what happened, end of story, and then focus all your attention and emotional energy on what do I now have to do to get myself out of this. Whenever you are confronted with adversity, recognize it, acknowledge it, and then stop thinking about it. Instead, think detailed, strategic, determined, and put all your focus into “What do I have to do now to get myself out of this situation?” If you shift your thinking to this strategy, you will find that you won’t have to then put all your focus and energy on positive thinking; instead you’re thinking and asking yourself, “What do I now have to do?", and then doing the steps that you need to do get out of it, to fix it, to not be in that situation.
Easy? Try it--you’ll find it gets easier the more you become strategic with your thinking. And what’s even better is the fact you will find that all that anxiety, stress, worry and sleepless nights will suddenly stop plaguing you as they once did.
